It was during the early morning hours on May 6th when a lumber truck driver and an 18-year-old driving a white sedan were traveling nearby to one another on I-95 [Source: Flagler Live]. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) said that the two vehicles were heading south in the center lane, the woman just ahead of the trucker, when her vehicle swerved toward the outside lane. In an effort to correct her mistake, the 18-year-old attempted to veer back toward the center lane.
As a result, the woman struck the rear-side wheel of the truck with the front of her sedan. The truck driver immediately lost control of his vehicle, causing it to crash and overturn along the median. The trucker, who FHP has identified as being a 56-year-old individual from Jacksonville, was ejected through the windshield and died at the scene. Flagler Live said the woman’s sedan ended up on the shoulder on the west side of the highway.
While the young woman did survive the crash, she required immediate medical attention as she suffered serious bodily injury. The source says she was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
What factors played a role in causing the truck collision to transpire?
According to one FHP trooper who was dispatched to the accident scene, “it appeared to be a distraction issue.” The source said that woman later told officers that she had been distracted by her phone. After the incident, troopers had to close both directions of I-95 while debris from the crash was cleared away. The truck driver had been transporting construction lumber at the time of the accident all of which was strewn across the highway. The source said that it took several hours before officials were able to reopen both directions of the interstate.
